Surkhandarya Region

The project covers 8 cities Uzun, Sherabad, Dzharkurgan, Kumkurgan, Denau, Sariasiya, Shurchi, Baysun (Amankhana)

While medium-sized cities in Uzbekistan face many common challenges, each city is endowed with unique assets and opportunities that need to be unlocked/leveraged. This will enable each city to mobilize its full potential and allow it to develop a strong economic backbone for long-term sustainable local development. While some cities have an essential logistics/trade function that could be strengthened and transformed into a regional hub, others have cultural heritage or natural assets that could be leveraged to attract tourists, injecting their expenditure into the local economy.

In order to consistently continue measures to comprehensively develop the infrastructure of cities and improve the efficiency of their management, expand the opportunities for residents of medium-sized cities to use services, as well as further increase the economic and tourism potential of cities:

a) The first stage of the project "Integrated Development of Medium-sized Cities" (hereinafter referred to as the Project) with the participation of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development is being implemented in the cities of Yangiyul, Kagan and Chartak as pilot cities;

b) For additional financing of the project:

On June 10, 2021, the Board of Directors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank approved the provision of a loan from the International Development Association to the Republic of Uzbekistan in the amount of US$ 100 million, and on June 11, 2021, the Board of Directors of the World Bank, the Bank approved the provision of a loan to the Republic of Uzbekistan in the amount of US$ 100 million;

 

Between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the International Development Association on September 30, 2022 and between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank on October 14, 2022 in the amount of US$ 100 million each, including a grace period of 5 years. Loan agreements have been signed for a period of 30 years;

The share of the Republic of Uzbekistan is the equivalent of 43.2 million US dollars in the form of tax and customs payments and financial expenses, as well as compensation for resettlement costs;

c) Funds for additional financing of the project are planned to be sent to the Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya regions for a period of 5 years (2023-2027). 

In accordance with Decree of President No. DP-47, construction of 307.4 km of drinking water supply networks and 7 water supply facilities, 99.3 km of wastewater networks and 9 facilities, improvement of 23.4 km of road infrastructure, construction of 6 garage complexes and purchase of 56 small machinery is planned in 8 cities of Surkhandarya region.
